Thai One on in Dunedin
It doesn't get much hotter than Thai! The Dunedin Plaza on Patricia Ave. ("Pat Ave." to the locals) is a hopping place, with three distinct restaurants to choose from, and a variety of other things to check out after your meal. Since many visitors tend to gravitate towards downtown Main St., they many times miss this area of town. Nothing flashy, but a well maintained older plaza without any big box stores. The big guy here is "Lueken's Big Town" - a huge liquor store (you will need a shopping cart) They feature some of the lowest prices in the universe (quite possilbly!), and thier wine guy really knows his stuff!

But here is the real reason you are reading this: Thai Laguna Cuisine is a favorite haunt, family owned, fresh, authentic and affordable. They have a huge menu with additional vegetarian offerings that many will appreciate. Papaya salad, Thai Iced Tea, Tom Yum Soup and of course Pad Thai are all favorites. Try out this insider secret; order the Vegetarian Pad Thai, it's loaded with fresh veggies! The hostess will win over your heart, and the chef will cook your food to order, just the way you like it!

Fresh seafood from a local fisherman?
At Sam's, the focus is on the food.
Just north of Main St. is a local secret: Sam's. Sam is a local commercial fisherman, and this is where they bring it in and cook it up fresh daily. This is a great place to learn what real seafood is supposed to be. From oysters on the half shell to locally caught fresh grouper sandwiches, Sam's does it right. Awesome sides, great selection of drinks, beer and wine. Enclosed patio in front is nice. Parking is limited, but don't sweat it,  you might get creative and park across the street, or on a side street or at a city lot behind Main Street to the south..

Trailside Lunch Locations
Check out all three!
Several options here. The pinellas trail runs through downtown, and locals like to grab lunch at the little place on the corner of James St. just south of town, where there is a little wooden concession-style counter with a few picnic tables right next to the bike rental place. It's quick and close so the merchants who work downtown favor this joint for a quick stop.

Another trailside happening place is right on Main St. and the trail - Skip's - it's a bar and grill with outside patio and lots of shade. They serve the best burger and fries baskets. Skips is known best for affordablity and generous portions. Great on the budget, but no compromise otherwise.

Get a little upscale by walking across Main St. to Cafe Alfresco. Excellent! It's a fun place, one of the best known places for tourists due to its visibility and bring em back service and style, and for the same reasons, the locals love it. "Secret secret" is that Alfresco also runs the restaurant at the Marina, and the Cafes at Caladesi Island and at Honeyoon Island. It's fun to drop in Alfresco and hop up on a lunch stool at the counter for a loaded dessert and espresso based coffee concoction. Brunch is the best on weekends. If you are a guset in town, your local hosts will often treat you to a meal here, as it is always a positive experience.

Let's head north on the trail a few blocks for our final stop, Jolli Mon's. The name says it all - it's little bit tiki, sorta Key West, a little Jamaican. They make a fine sangria, and attract a fun colorful crowd. Jolli Mon's is more visible from the trail than any roadway, so it sometimes goes unnoticed unless one happens along the trail.

Here are a few Jolli Mon's reviews:

"Key West style bar & grill about 2 blocks north of Main St. and one block east of Alternate 19 behind the quilt shop. Backs up to the Pinellas Trail. No liquor, so no margaritas , but great sangria, beers, GREAT island-type food. Live entertainment on Saturday nights and I think Tuesdays. If John is playing, we sing along--loudly!! Service is outstanding. Prices great."

"We took PW and Eric there the last time they were here .... the Key West salad is to DIE for!! Baby greens, oranges, almonds. mango dressing ... yummy! You have to sing along with JingleJohn ... he forgets the words! LOL He's a good buddy  NB ... thinking the next warm Tuesday night needs to be a JollyMon kind of night "

"That was a great lunch and a great location. the best part is the memory of the ice cold beer. If you're not living on the edge you're taking up way too much space."

"Jolly Mon's in Dunedin off ALT 19 has the best burgers I have almost ever had. You can order anything you want on it. The last time I got a triple patty burger with pepper jack cheese. And those patties are already a 1/3lb. - whew!"
